After a Devastating Accident, Gifty Asafo Refused to Lose Her Life or Her Family

Some people survive because life gives them another chance. Others survive because they have someone waiting for them. For Gifty Asafo, it was her seven children. Before the accident, Gifty was a hardworking mother who ran a small chop bar to support her family. Her husband was not working, so much of the responsibility of keeping the household running rested on her shoulders. Then, one day, a terrible accident changed everything. Gifty was riding a motorcycle when she was involved in a collision with a car. The injuries to her leg were devastating. The flesh had been badly torn away, leaving the bone exposed. At the hospital, Gifty received news that would change her life forever.

Doctors told her that her leg needed to be amputated.

For many people, the decision would have been unimaginable. But for Gifty, there was something even more frightening than losing her leg.

She was afraid of what would happen to her children.

She knew that if she could no longer work, there might be no one left to provide for her family.

So, Gifty made the painful decision to leave the hospital without the amputation.

She returned home with her severely injured leg and sought help from a herbalist to care for the wound.

For the next five years, Gifty was bedridden.

Five years of pain.

Five years of dependence.

Five years of watching her children grow while she struggled to regain the ability to stand.

During this difficult period, the suffering became unbearable for her husband. Unable to cope with the circumstances in their home, he turned to alcohol.

Eventually, he passed away. Gifty was now facing life as a single mother of seven. With no husband to support the family and no stable source of income, her children became her greatest source of strength. They cared for their mother until, slowly, she began to stand again. Then came the next battle: learning to walk. Gifty eventually began moving around with a crutch. Although she could no longer live or work the way she once did, she refused to stop trying.

She returned to farming.

Today, Gifty farms cassava to feed her family. She uses some of the cassava to prepare food for the household and processes part of it into corn dough, which she sells to earn whatever income she can. But even with all her determination, the family’s struggles remain overwhelming. Gifty has seven children, yet only two are currently in school. The others have had to stay home and help their mother with farming because the family cannot afford to send everyone to school. These are children who should be learning in classrooms, dreaming about their futures, and preparing for the lives ahead of them.

Instead, they are helping their mother cultivate cassava so the family can eat.

A Mother Who Refused to Give Up

Gifty’s story was brought to Smile4mation through one of our volunteer leaders, who nominated the family for support. When we heard her story, we saw more than a woman living with the consequences of a devastating accident. We saw a mother who had survived years of pain, loss, poverty, and uncertainty, and still woke up every day determined to provide for her children.

Gifty could have given up. But she didn’t. She kept fighting. And now, Smile4mation wants to fight alongside her. Our long-term goal is to renovate the family’s home and provide them with a safer and more comfortable place to live.

But before we begin that transformation, we are addressing some of the family’s immediate needs.

Smile4mation is providing business support to help Gifty strengthen her livelihood and create a more sustainable source of income.We are also providing education support for some of her children, helping give them an opportunity to return to school and pursue a future beyond the farm. And because mobility remains a daily challenge for Gifty, we are providing her with a mobility aid that will allow her to move more freely and safely. For years, she has had to rely on a single crutch because the family could not afford the support she needed.

Now, we want to help give her back something many of us take for granted: the freedom to move. Her Story Is Not Over. Gifty’s accident changed her life.

But it did not end her story. She lost the life she once knew. She lost her ability to work as she used to. She lost her husband. But she never stopped being a mother. Every cassava she plants, every meal she prepares, and every step she takes is a reminder of how hard she has fought to keep her children going.

Today, Smile4mation is stepping into that journey with her.

Because Gifty spent years fighting alone.

Now, she doesn’t have to.

Her story began with an accident.

But we believe it can end with hope, dignity, and a new beginning.
