She Became a Mother Before She Had the Chance to Be a Child: The Story of Mavis Awaitey
At 10, she became a caregiver. At 12, she became a mother. Today, Mavis Awaitey is fighting for a future she never had the chance to imagine.
A Childhood Interrupted by Loss
For most children, the age of 10 is filled with school, friendships, laughter and dreams about the future.
But for Mavis Awaitey, life took a devastating turn when she lost her mother.
With their father absent and eventually abandoning the family, Mavis and her younger siblings were left in the care of their elderly grandmother.
Their grandmother loved them, but age and financial difficulties made it almost impossible for her to provide for the children.
And so, at an age when she should have been receiving care, Mavis became the one providing it.
She prepared meals, looked after her siblings and assumed responsibilities far beyond her years.
She was a child, but everyone depended on her like a mother.
From One Struggle to Another
Hoping to give the children a better life, their grandmother arranged for them to move from their village to live with an aunt.
Mavis was enrolled in school, but the family’s financial situation remained difficult. School fees and basic necessities were often beyond their reach.
Her responsibilities also increased. Beyond caring for her siblings, she helped look after her aunt’s children.
Education gradually became less of a priority, not because Mavis lacked potential, but because survival demanded so much of her attention.
Then came another heartbreaking chapter.
At just 12 years old, Mavis became pregnant after a man exploited her vulnerability. The man disappeared, leaving her to face motherhood without his support.
The little girl who had spent years raising her siblings was now raising a baby of her own.
Surviving Against the Odds
To earn a living, Mavis takes on physically demanding work, including weeding people’s farms.
Sometimes, she collects discarded water sachets to sell for whatever little money she can earn.
Her daily life revolves around finding food, caring for her baby and supporting the children who depend on her.
Her nine-month-old baby has also experienced frequent illness and concerning physical weakness, adding another layer of worry to an already difficult situation.
Yet, beneath these overwhelming responsibilities, Mavis has held onto something precious.
A dream of becoming a fashion designer.
When Smile4mation Met Mavis
Mavis’s story reached Smile4mation through one of our community volunteers.
During our engagement with her, we initially considered supporting her return to formal education.
But Mavis expressed a different ambition.
She wanted to learn fashion design, develop a practical skill and eventually earn an income to support her family.
We listened.
Understanding her circumstances, we identified a fashion apprenticeship within walking distance of her home, allowing her to pursue her training while remaining close to her baby and siblings.
Smile4mation provided Mavis with a sewing machine, enrolled her in the apprenticeship and covered the necessary training expenses and materials.
For Mavis, this was more than receiving equipment.
It was an opportunity to begin building the future she had always dreamed of.
Our Commitment Goes Beyond Mavis
Our intervention also considers the children whose lives are connected to hers.
With most of her younger siblings out of school because of financial hardship, Smile4mation is working toward ensuring that every child in the household has access to education.
We are also committed to supporting the family’s basic needs, improving their living conditions and helping Mavis access appropriate care for her baby.
Our long-term vision is to see Mavis become a professional fashion designer, establish a sustainable business and, eventually, have the opportunity to create a fashion school where other young people can acquire valuable skills.
A Future Worth Fighting For
Mavis’s story is a reminder of the invisible burdens that many vulnerable girls carry.
Some children grow up dreaming about what they want to become.
Others grow up worrying about how everyone around them will survive.
Mavis deserved the same childhood, protection, education and opportunities as every other child.
Although we cannot give her back the years she lost, we can stand beside her as she builds a different future.
One where she is not defined solely by what she has endured, but by the possibilities ahead of her.
Because every child deserves a childhood. Every young mother deserves support. And every dream deserves a chance.
