Abandoned After a Tragic Pregnancy Complication - The Story of Mavis

Some stories remind us how fragile life can be and how quickly everything can change.

For Mavis, a 30-year-old mother of two, life took a devastating turn during what should have been one of the happiest moments of her life.

Pregnant with her third child, Mavis looked forward to welcoming a new baby into her family. But tragedy struck when complications developed during the pregnancy. After being rushed to the hospital while bleeding heavily, doctors discovered that her baby had died in the womb.

As her condition worsened, her family feared she would not survive.

During this difficult period, the father of her children left the hospital, telling family members he was going home to collect a few items. He never returned.

Although they had lived together for years and built a family together, they were never legally married. With little knowledge of his relatives, Mavis and her family were left without answers, support, or closure.

Thankfully, Mavis survived.

But her battle was far from over.

After spending a month in the hospital, she was discharged home. However, the once energetic and hardworking mother could barely walk, struggled to speak, and found it difficult to perform even the simplest daily tasks.

Her children would call out to her, hoping for the comfort only a mother can provide. Yet Mavis was unable to respond the way she desperately wanted to.

A mother who once nurtured, protected, and cared for her children suddenly found herself dependent on others.

For nine months, her family sought help and healing wherever they could. She spent months at a prayer camp while her loved ones continued to hope for recovery.

When she eventually returned home, her elderly mother became her greatest source of strength.

Patiently and lovingly, she helped her daughter relearn basic skills, teaching her how to walk and communicate again.

Years later, Mavis continues to face physical challenges. While her speech has improved significantly, she still struggles with mobility and cannot perform many physically demanding tasks. This has made it impossible for her to return to regular employment and provide for her children as she once did.

Today, much of the family’s survival depends on Mavis’ mother, a grandmother approaching 75 years of age. The small income she earns from farming is used to feed the family, support the children, and cover daily expenses.

Mavis’ story came to our attention through a nomination submitted on Smile4mation.org.

After reviewing her story and visiting the family to assess their situation, we knew we had to help.

Through Smile4mation, we are providing business support to help create a sustainable source of income for the family. We are also offering educational support for the children to help ensure they have the opportunity to pursue a brighter future.

However, there is still more work to be done.

The family’s home requires urgent repairs. Their roof has several holes, making living conditions difficult, especially during the rainy season. One of our goals is to help reroof the house and provide a safer and more comfortable environment for the family.
