Some mothers carry immense pain behind their smiles, fighting battles the world may never see. Mercy Korkor Tetteh is one of those incredibly strong women. Her story is one of profound heartbreak, relentless struggle, and, ultimately, a beautiful restoration of hope.
The Weight of Unimaginable Loss
Mercy’s hardships began when her husband became seriously ill. Instead of finding support during a terrifying time, she was met with cruelty. His family falsely accused her of witchcraft, forcibly taking him away and cutting off all communication. Mercy was kept separated from the man she loved until his passing.
She never even had the chance to say goodbye. Left to grieve alone, she endured public shame and blame, suddenly finding herself as the sole provider for their three children.
A Mother's Ultimate Sacrifice
For twelve long years, Mercy fought with everything she had to keep her family alive. To put food on the table, she carried heavy loads of salt labor so grueling that the physical strain severely damaged her body, eventually requiring surgery.
But poverty offers no days off. Despite strict medical warnings, Mercy was forced to return to work. She began carrying heavy baskets of fish from the shore to the market, earning a mere 5 Ghana cedis (GH₵5) per trip.
Yet, perhaps the most heartbreaking part of Mercy’s reality was where she and her children laid their heads. For nearly five years, they lived without the security of four walls. Every night, they spread a simple woven mat in a public corridor, packing it away each morning. Despite these devastating circumstances, Mercy refused to give up. She held tightly to the belief that one day, help would find them.
Rebuilding Hope: How Smile4mation Stepped In
That help finally arrived when Smile4mation learned of her living conditions through a compassionate nomination. Through our Single Mother Project, we stepped in to change the trajectory of Mercy’s life.
Smile4mation secured and fully renovated a safe, comfortable home for Mercy and her children giving them the security they had been denied for years. To ensure her long-term independence, we provided financial support to help her establish her own small business. Because we believe deeply in the transformative power of education, especially for the girl child, we also paid the school fees for her daughter to secure a brighter future. 
Restoring Dignity
After more than a decade of struggling simply to survive, Mercy and her children were finally given what every family deserves: a chance to live with dignity, security, and true hope.
Through the Smile4mation Single Mother Project, we continue to remind vulnerable women that their past circumstances do not define their future. Even after years of relentless hardship, a new beginning is entirely possible. Mercy’s journey is a powerful testament that sometimes, the strongest mothers are the ones who have cried in silence but kept moving forward for the love of their children.
