Smile4mation: Rebuilding Hope for Mary Essel, the Grandmother Raising Eight Grandchildren

At nearly 70 years old, Mary Essel should be enjoying a well-deserved season of rest. Instead, she spends her days fighting to keep eight grandchildren fed, clothed, and in school.

Her life changed forever when her daughter left home to hawk sachet water along the highway in search of a better future. Tragically, she was knocked down by a motorcycle, leaving behind nine children. One of the children has since passed away.

The children’s father, a driver, abandoned his responsibilities following her death. Years later, he too lost his life in a road accident, leaving Mary as the only person standing between these children and an uncertain future.

Today, Mary sells charcoal at the market and farms tirelessly to survive. Every cedi she earns goes toward the children. The family lives together in a single room with a leaking roof. Their uniforms are faded, their shoes are worn out, and some days, having two meals is a blessing.

Yet despite the pain, Mary has never given up.

When her story was nominated through the Smile4mation website, founders Nana Mitch and Schardo Mitch were deeply moved by her resilience and unwavering love. Through Smile4mation, the family received groceries, educational support, cash to strengthen Mary’s business, new school uniforms, shoes, socks, school bags, and fresh haircuts for the children.

But this is only the beginning.

Smile4mation’s mission is to tear down their current home and rebuild it into a safe two-bedroom house, a place where Mary can finally rest and where her grandchildren can sleep comfortably, study peacefully, and dream of a brighter tomorrow.

“Mary’s story is a reminder that true heroes walk among us,” said Nana Mitch and Schardo Mitch. “She has spent her life pouring into others, and now it is our turn to pour back into her.”
