From a marriage she never chose to nights spent sleeping beside a public lavatory, Diana Tey’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength it takes to survive.
A Life She Never Chose
For Diana Tey, the search for freedom began with a decision she was never allowed to make.
A fishmonger by trade, Diana’s life changed when her cousin led her to believe they were visiting a sick relative. Unknown to her, an arranged marriage had been planned without her consent.
Despite her objections, she was forced to follow the man to his village, where she endured years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
Her marriage, which should have offered companionship and security, became a place of fear.
Eventually, Diana escaped and sought refuge with her mother. Rather than receiving the protection she desperately needed, she faced pressure from family members to return to her abuser.
Determined to protect herself and pursue a different future, Diana fled to Accra with one of her three children.
When Freedom Came Without Shelter
In Accra, Diana worked tirelessly as a Kayayo, carrying loads to earn a living.
Through years of sacrifice, she managed to establish a small kiosk where she could live and operate her business. Unfortunately, the land was reclaimed, and her belongings were destroyed.
She rebuilt her life, only to experience another devastating loss when the same situation occurred again.
With her resources exhausted, Diana began living in an open space beside a public lavatory.
A wooden bench became her bed. A small wooden box became her storage space. The open sky became her roof.
Exposed to the rain, heat, and insecurity, she continued running her small business despite regularly losing items to theft.
For Diana, survival had become a daily responsibility.
A Community Nomination That Changed Everything
Diana’s circumstances caught the attention of a man in her community who nominated her for Smile4mation.
When The Mitch Brothers learned about her journey, they saw beyond her circumstances. They saw a woman who had endured unimaginable hardship yet continued fighting for herself and her children.
We wanted Diana to experience something she had been denied for far too long: the feeling of being celebrated, valued, and cared for.
With the generous support of our partners, Diana enjoyed a special day dedicated entirely to her.
Nails Geek treated her to beautiful braids and a manicure, while Just Love Beauty Parlour provided her makeup transformation.
Asabea Halm celebrated her beauty and identity with a stunning African outfit, and Silky Diva Trends completed her look with a new pair of shoes and a handbag.
It was a celebration of the woman she has always been, beyond everything she has endured.
From Surviving Outdoors to Rebuilding a Home
But Diana needed more than a beautiful day.
Through Smile4mation, we secured accommodation and paid two years’ rent for Diana and her family, giving them the foundation for a safer and more stable future.
We also supported her small business to strengthen her ability to earn an income and provide for her children.
Our work continues as we prepare to renovate, furnish, and transform her new living space into a dignified home.
A place where she can rest without fear of the weather. A place where her belongings can be secure. A place where her family can begin creating new memories.
Above all, a place that reminds her she is deserving of comfort, peace, and belonging.
To Every Woman Fighting a Silent Battle
Diana’s story is a reminder that escaping abuse is not always the end of suffering. For many survivors, the journey towards safety comes with displacement, financial hardship, and the painful task of starting over.
To anyone experiencing abuse or living in fear: you deserve safety, and you do not have to face your circumstances alone.
Where possible, reach out to trusted individuals, survivor-support organizations, or appropriate protection services that can help you develop a safe plan and access assistance.
Survival should never be the highest expectation we place on a woman. She deserves the opportunity to live, heal, and thrive.
Diana’s past may have been filled with pain, but it does not have to define her future.
